In my last blog, I told you about my experience with Gerry and his traumatic brain injury. For the first several years after he came home, I had only limited time to work as he could not be left alone. I made arrangements with my next-door neighbor to come to my home in the evening to stay with Gerry so I could work. I had started a business which I called “Wills on Wheels”, basically I was a lawyer who made house visits. I would go to people’s homes in the evening and discuss their estate planning needs. It became as much an event for me to get out of the house as it was to make money. People would laugh when I expressed that their house visit was the highlight of my week. A night out and something different from my day-to-day life which at the time was difficult, to say the least.
Wills on Wheels
Over time I started to see that helping people get their plans in order in a calm, relaxed manner was extremely successful. I find that so many people don’t get their plans done because it’s a too difficult to get find the time, with children and work or because people really don’t want to look at death or catastrophic injury. I also find that people think that going to an attorney’s office is intimidating or many feel distrust or they don’t know what to expect.
I felt my Wills on Wheels was a business which addressed some of these concerns. I had a very simple business card with a drawing of a girl with a ponytail driving a little black convertible, the message being ‘this is simple and non-threatening.’ I ran this business for several years with much success. I finally now have been able to work at an office in downtown Newburyport where I can see clients during the day. However, I find that I most often I meet clients in the evening because it’s a great time for people to come and relax a little, learn about how and why they need estate plan documents how to plan for living and how to plan for yes–death.
I’ve created several plans so that not only is it accessible, you are educated, and it happens to be handled in an affordable manner. I have several different choices of plans for people depending on your place in life, your overall wealth and what your goals are. My first consultation to help get you educated to see where you might need to go is complimentary. My plans are all a flat fee, so you know exactly what you were going to pay by the time you leave the office after your first visit and for up charges once we agree on your fee. Please give me a call if you’d like to make a time to come in and talk to me. I have evening appointments and I still do some house visits for those people who have elderly family members.
